Written By Gary

Today's blog has been written by Gary. It is something that he feels very strongly about. While this blog may offend some, please understand that is not the purpose. The purpose is to educate.

This past year a lot of horses have come through our barn. Some young that needed to be started, others that just needed a refresher and some that needed finishing. I also had a few come through that needed to be started again because their owner's had attempted to do this on their own.

While I can understand the desire to start your own horse and feel that accomplishment is yours and yours alone...I need to stress the level of danger here. The videos and books made available today make training sound very easy. They were put together by some great marketing companies and all involved have made a lot of money off of them. However, from experience and the horses that have come through, I can tell you IT DOESN'T WORK. If it did work, you would see the top showmen using these methods. Tell me, how many trainers at the shows do you see using these methods? I'm not talking your local fair, I'm talking the big ones. Riding horses is a dangerous sport. We all know that and hear of riders being injured on a regular basis. So when riding, ride smart.

My question to you is this....Why gamble with the starting/training of a horse based on gimmicks & great marketing? The first rides on a horse are the rides that stay with them. When you climb on their back, their knee jerk reaction is that initial memory. I have had horses come through that have been scared to death of accepting a rider because of that initial experience. Let me tell you, while I am good at fixing problems, I can not erase that memory from the horses' mind. What I can do is make the training process a relaxed process for them and give them a good experience. I can teach you, the rider, how to "manage" the problem. These issues can stay with the horse for a short time or long time. There are a lot of variables involved from the temperment of the horse to the confidence and experience of the rider. The methods and tools I send you home with, are the same ones I send my daughters out to ride with. They are tried and true.

My training program is based on experience and that experience demonstrates success. We are not "yahoos" here, I take my job very seriously. The training I put on a horse can be undone by the inexperienced rider who chooses to ignore the methods taught. Unlike most trainers I have included a special time for the horse owner/rider to come and ride with me. This time is dedicated to insuring they have the tools to take their horse home and continue riding and enjoying their horse.

These methods are the methods I have used during the horse's time with me and I have had success. I share them with you so that you too will have the same success.

I have won a lot of awards from the race track to the show pen. In order for me to be successful I have pretty much tried it all. I know what works and what doesn't work. This is why you have brought your horse to me.

Remembrance Day

In Flanders Fields
By: Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918)
Canadian Army

In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

ORHA Grand Finale at Blacks

Well the show season has ended and it was a success! Gary and ML Shine My Checks finished out the year in 4th for Green Horse....This was Checks first year showing and he missed approximately 4 shows this year....What a great job by both horse and rider. We received many compliments on the hard work and dedication that this pair demonstrated over the summer months.

Genuine Oso and I ended our show season early at Fletcher's Horse World....with having missed several shows over the summer due to prior commitments, we still were able to finish in the top 10! Considering Genuine Oso has been in retirement for 7, yes that's right, 7 years! and it was my first year in reining, we made an outstanding team. Genuine Oso has the ability to touch my heart...he was so good for me...However, he is back in retirement and enjoying trail rides and the life he had become used to....

It was a great year and we look forward to next show season...it seems so far away, but there is a lot of work to do. Gary is bringing along our 2 year old and getting our yearling ready to go into training in her 2 year old year....

We will still keep blogging any updates and announcements and we hope everyone has a happy and safe winter...burrrr

ORHA London Fair

We have just returned from the London Fair where the OBBO Futurity Show was held. It was a very busy few days. Harvey and Molly Stevens did an incredible job putting this show together.

Without sounding like a broken record, I do have to take this opportunity to congratulate ML Shine My Checks and owners, Mane Lane Quarter Horses. "Checks" arrived at the show with a very competitive attitude. Despite all the noise and commotion that is typically associated with large fairs, Checks was all business. At the end of this season Checks will be returning home to stand at stud to inside mares.

Training

It has been a very busy summer and it has flown by. We have finished our new outdoor sand ring (100' x 200') and we will continue to make more upgrades to the property. We have had a lot of horses through this year and met many new clients. We wish everyone continued success and hope you will keep in touch. Keep in mind Gary will do private sessions for $60.00 if you find you are in need of some extra help.

We are now booked until November 1, 2009. If you would like to book your horse in for November or December please contact us and submit a deposit to reserve your space. Keep in mind, due to increase in operating costs, our prices will go up to $800.00 per month effective January 1, 2010.
